What on-page SEO actually covers

On-page SEO is everything on your own site that decides whether a search engine can reach a page, work out what it is for, and consider it worth putting in front of somebody.

None of it is glamorous. Titles and headings. Internal links. Page speed. How URLs are built. Whether images carry alt text. Whether the same article quietly exists at four different addresses. Taken one at a time these look trivial, and most of them are. Taken together they decide whether the rest of your SEO budget does anything at all.

The uncomfortable version: a site can be doing everything else properly — good content, respectable links, a real audience — and still sit on page three because of something nobody thought to check.

Where We Start

The audit comes first

Every engagement opens with an audit, and it is a real one rather than a PDF exported from a tool with your logo on the cover.

We crawl the site the way a search engine would, then compare that against what is actually indexed. The gap between those two numbers is usually the first surprise of the engagement. Pages that should never have been indexed are sitting in there; pages that carry the whole commercial argument are not.

After that we take the pages that actually matter to the business — not all of them, the ones that earn — and work out what is holding each one back. Occasionally it is one clear problem. More often it is four small ones stacked on each other, none of which would matter alone.

The four that usually matter most

Indexing and crawl waste. Filter combinations, tag archives, staging copies, printer-friendly versions. Search engines spend a finite amount of attention on your site, and most sites spend a good share of it on pages nobody was ever meant to read.
One page per intent. Three pages half-answering the same question compete with each other and none of them wins. Deciding which page owns which search — and merging or redirecting the rest — is often the single change that moves things most.
Internal linking. The cheapest authority you will ever get is the authority you already have, pointed somewhere useful. Most sites link generously to their blog and barely at all to the pages that make money.
Speed, honestly assessed. Core Web Vitals matter, but rarely as much as the people selling speed audits suggest. We fix what is genuinely slow and tell you when the remaining milliseconds are not worth the invoice. Our take on what still counts in 2026.
Why It Matters

The foundation everything else sits on

Crawlable and understood

A page that cannot be reached or cannot be interpreted will not rank for anything, however well it is written.

Better for actual people

Nearly everything on this list also makes the site faster and clearer to use. That shows up in conversions, not just rankings.

It makes links pay off

Authority earned through off-page work flows through your internal structure. If that structure is broken, the links are wasted.

“We had no idea why several important pages were struggling. Grace went through the site with us step by step and pointed out things our previous SEO provider had completely overlooked. Really helpful experience.”

Who does this work

On-page and technical SEO here is handled by Grace Whitmore, who runs the audits, prioritises the fixes and works through them with whoever maintains your site.

Where you have your own developers, she writes the tickets and reviews the result. Where you do not, we implement the changes ourselves. Either way you see the list before anything is touched, with a plain reason attached to every item.

On timing: on-page work tends to show results faster than link building, because you are removing an obstacle rather than building an asset. Indexing problems can correct within days of a fix. Structural changes usually take a few weeks to settle. Nobody can promise you a position, and we will not pretend otherwise — but this is the part of SEO where the cause and effect are easiest to see.
